Look to the Light
As I was looking out of my bedroom window the other day, something caught my eye…
The rose plant that had been looking rather unhappy in the pot on my windowsill for the past few months had suddenly started growing again. But, why?
It can only be because it had started to receive more light now that we have entered the warmer months. It is a north facing window so during the winter it can be rather dark and gloomy on that side of the house, but once summer rolls around the morning sunlight cheers it up immensely.
It got me thinking, how much like that poor little rose are we? If we don’t receive what we need, we don’t grow well either. As Christians, it can be very easy to get sucked into the busyness of life and not make time to receive from God.
We can’t grow in the darkness of sin and distraction. We need to live in the light of God’s word. I know it can be difficult to find the time but if we don’t prioritise the thing that we need the most – God’s word is described as food for our souls (John 6:35) – then we will starve and not grow strong and healthy in our faith.
Once the rose started to receive the light, it started to grow strong again. If we step into the light of God’s word each day, we will receive the light of life (John 1:4) that sustains us to run the race set before us with endurance (Hebrews 12:1). This life isn’t always easy, but God promises that He will sustain us (Psalms 55:22, Isaiah 46:4).
